Rope access started in the early eighties with the development of safety techniques making it appropriate to work at height. In 1987 the world’s first rope access trade association, Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA), was formed. The UK’s Government health and safety authority, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), was involved from the outset and was a prime mover in ensuring that rope access would be a safe system of work at height.
Our industry in South Africa, is regulated by Institute for Work at Height (IWH) and by respective national associations, standards and legislation in other countries.
All our rope access and working at heights activities is performed in accordance to current legislation, SANS and IWH standards.
